Dance Descriptions

Do I Need a Partner?
All of these dances are done with a partner. One partner does the man's side (lead). One partner does the lady's side (follow). Partners are never required for classes (except Advanced Level classes). However, equal numbers of Men to Ladies is desired. (Or "leads" to "follows" for the P.C. crowd.) We do try to rotate partners in class, but this depends on the class dynamics. Some people simply do not want to change partners.

If you don't have a partner, we do try to find one for you, but we cannot guarantee one will be available who will be a suitable or acceptable match in height, shape, weight, dance level-skill, attitude, looks, hygiene, age or financial portfolio.

Therefore, it is to your advantage to invite and bring your own partner who you already know and like to work with in class and practice with outside of class.

Class Levels:

Beginning Level 1 classes
With a few exceptions, most of these classes require little or no dance knowledge at all. These classes are designed for the brand new dancer with no rhythm and two left feet. All you need is a sense of humor, a little patience with yourself and your partner, and a willingness to learn.

These classes meet once each week for four or five weeks in a row, unless otherwise noted. Each subsequent class builds on the previous week's class, so it is important that you start with Class #1 and attend all the classes in the series.

Are you Shy or Self-Conscience?
Dancing is a Social activity. "Hiding" in private lessons is tempting, but it won't help you get comfortable dancing around and among other people . Therefore, group classes are still a good place for you to get the bulk of your dance instruction. Get over the first awkward hurdle by attending the Tuesday Social dances before you start classes. That's where you will starting meeting other dancers, get a feeling for the studio and the teaching space, see all the dances and hear all the appropriate music. It's also a great place to ask questions and "just watch".

Class Levels:

Tweener / Level 2 Classes
Tweener Classes pick up where Level 1 Classes left off. They fill the gap between bare basic beginning beginner level classes and truly Level 2 classes and beyond. My desire is that more beginning dancers would continue on to this level. You've already done a lot of the "hard" work in the Level 1 classes - Let's move up and on !!

More material is added to Level 1 material plus proper technique and styling options. Therefore, It is necessary for you to already have a basic, working knowledge of the particular dance rhythm being addressed and are comfortable with executing the basic material of that dance.

Class Levels:

Level 2 Classes
These classes are truly intermediate and beyond level. The basics are not taught in these classes. Therefore, the student needs to already have a solid working knowledge of the particular dance rhythm being addressed and are comfortable with executing a variety of components of that dance.
More intermediate material, including combinations and rhythm changes, is added. There is additional (and necessary) emphasis on the use of proper technique and styling options.

Class Levels:

Level 3 Classes
These classes are truly advanced level and meet periodically when enough interest in doing such a class is expressed. The dance rhythm being addressed changes at the request of those participating in the class.Partners are required for these classes. These classes require a solid understanding and execution of the dance rhythm being addressed.

Students in this class are at different intermediate and advance levels. Instruction varies some for each couple. Therefore, couples need to be able to work alone for a time after receiving specific instruction, help or suggestions.

Class Levels:

"Stuff" Technique Classes
Patterns are easy to get.
It's the "Stuff" than makes it work . . . . so, what IS "Stuff"?

"Stuff" is not patterns or amalgamations.
"Stuff" is the fundamental understanding and skill needed to all successful dancing, even social dancing.
"Stuff" is what makes or breaks your dancing endeavors.
Most of us try to dance what way it looks, but "looks" are deceptive.
If your interested in dancing better, then "Stuff" is what you need.

It's never too early to start working on "Stuff".
Just ask to find out if a particular "Stuff" Class is right for you.

A variety of technical material is addressed that impacts all you dance styles, be it Swing, Latin, Club or Ballroom. Things like Framing, Footwork, Connection, misconceptions about Rise 'n Fall, Lean vs Sway, etc. Partners are not required for these classes. Much of the technical material covered can, and should be, done individually, on your own, without your partner. Your ability to execute "Stuff" concepts on your own will positively enhance your own dancing and your dance partnership.

Class Levels:

Private Lessons
Group classes are a great place to start and grow your dance skill. However, sometimes, some one-on-one time with your dance coach can help you iron out issues, bumps and challenges that are unique to you and your partner. Private lessons should not take the place of group classes, but they can certain enhance your personal dance skill.

Other reasons for considering Private Lessons would be a sporadic work schedule that doesn't allow you to attend group classes regularly, or a special event coming up, like a wedding or cruise.
